{"id":435,"date":"2023-09-11T09:20:28","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T08:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/nuclearsocieties\/?page_id=435"},"modified":"2026-02-11T10:36:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:36:32","slug":"nuclear-futures-thinking-with-failure","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/nuclear-societies\/nuclear-futures-thinking-with-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Futures: Thinking with failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"aVla3\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"wide-content-host\">\n<div class=\"SlLx9 WWy1F byzS1 WWy1F\" aria-label=\"Email message\">\n<div id=\"UniqueMessageBody\" class=\"XbIp4 jmmB7 GNqVo yxtKT allowTextSelection\" role=\"document\" aria-label=\"Message body\">\n<div lang=\"en-GB\">\n<div>\n<p><b>4 &#8211; 5 July 2023,<\/b><b>\u00a0University of Exeter<br \/>\n<\/b><em>Funded by the Societies and Cultures Institute<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Led by Karen Bickerstaff and Leila Dawney, this two-day Nuclear Societies workshop explored how working with ideas of failure could enrich and strengthen research being conducted within the Nuclear Societies group.\u00a0 We had excellent keynotes talks from Catherine Alexander (Durham, Anthropology)\u00a0 on \u2018thinking through fusion\u2019s promises and failures\u2019, and from John Downer (Bristol) on \u2018reckoning with catastrophic reactor failure\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There were a series of flash-talk (brief presentation) discussions based around the history of failure, contemporary energy transitions, and storying failure \u2013 which enabled us to make some really interesting connections between nuclear temporalities and critical intellectual and methodological debates around concepts and contexts of failure, environmental and climate politics, 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century histories, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary working. The workshop brought together a diverse group of academics from across Geography, History and Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy and Anthropology, as well as leading academics from the universities of Durham, Bristol and Liverpool.\u00a0 We will look to put in place subsequent (annual) events to develop the network and support writing and research projects.<\/p>\n<p>Do get in touch with us if you would like to connect with the group and find out more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4 &#8211;
