She is a member of the observational group at Exeter that specialises in making and interpreting oceanic measurements of carbon cycle parameters at high accuracy. Her core research aims to understand the biogeochemical drivers of the changes observed in the marine carbon cycle, both the exchange of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;with the atmosphere at the sea surface and the transport of carbon in the ocean interior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is a member of the Scientific Steering Group of the International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (www.ioccp.org), and leads the Atlantic section in the Surface Ocean CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;Atlas (www.socat.info).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is actively involved in the UK projects RAGNARoCC (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenhouse-gases.org.uk\/ragnarocc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.greenhouse-gases.org.uk\/ragnarocc<\/a>) and the Ocean Acidification Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanacidification.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.oceanacidification.org.uk<\/a>), and the EU projects CARBOCHANGE (<a href=\"http:\/\/carbochange.b.uib.no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carbochange.b.uib.no<\/a>), INGOS (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingos-infrastructure.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.ingos-infrastructure.eu<\/a>), GREENCYCLES II (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencycles.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.greencycles.org<\/a>), and GEOCARBON (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocarbon.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.geocarbon.net<\/a>), and FixO3 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fixo3.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.fixo3.eu<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Broad research specialisms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Ocean and atmosphere observations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marine biogeochemical cycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marine carbon cycle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>PhD (University of Essex)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Career<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Studied chemistry in Germany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fellowship for one year at University of Sussex, UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PhD on \u201cMicrobial methane oxidation in marine sediments around intertidal gas seeps\u201d at University of Essex and the Marine Biological Association of the UK, Plymouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-docs at University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne on observations of marine sulphur compounds and University of East Anglia on the marine carbon cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/geography.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/index.php?web_id=Ute_Schuster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More Information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ute is a marine biogeochemist specialising in the study of the variability of the marine carbon cycle through observations and numerical techniques.
