Our project could not have found a better partner in Giocherenda, a Palermo-based artist collective comprised of young refugees who design games centred around storytelling, memory and journeys. This collaboration allowed for a reflection on the matrices of the Classical world and for engagement with the tangible experiences of the community at large.<\/p>\n

Representing Giocherenda, Mustapha Conteh travelled to the UK to join us from 29th January to 5th February 2019. During this period, he demonstrated to us the philosophy of the games and participated in a series of events including; the\u00a0Reconceptualising Migration and Journey Stories workshop <\/a>where the games were implemented, a public talk,\u00a0No Maps, No Borders: An evening with Giocherenda\u00a0<\/a>by the university\u2019s ExTalks Society, and a performance\u00a0of cultural intersection between modern music and ancient pots,\u00a0Ideas in Motion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This joint effort saw a convergence of ancient history with modern instruments for constructing narratives, alongside the universal theme of journeys with current perspectives. This generated promising insight into how the power of the ancient nostos<\/em>\u00a0might be received in a contemporary context, and reciprocally of how present-day circumstances can inform our encounters in antiquity.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Mustapha, a representative of Giocherenda. Today we are at Pilton Community College, we are using the Giocherenda storytelling dice with the kids, to tell our stories. So we explain how to use the dice to the kids, and they do the magic\u2026 just throw the dice on the floor, and whatever image comes out, they use the image to tell a story, to invent a story. The next person does the same thing, connecting it to the previous, then at the end of the day we have one big story – a collective story.\u201d<\/p>\n
