{"id":1567,"date":"2026-06-15T09:06:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T09:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/?p=1567"},"modified":"2026-06-15T09:06:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T09:06:55","slug":"top-tips-for-public-engagement-with-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/2026\/06\/15\/top-tips-for-public-engagement-with-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Tips for Public Engagement with Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>With the 2025-26 academic term&nbsp;coming to an end, we wanted to reflect on the findings from this year\u2019s Public Engagement with Research drop-in programme.&nbsp;This blog breaks down these sessions into key findings&nbsp;researchers can use in their public engagement work.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our drop-in&nbsp;programme, taking place over the last six months, has invited research staff at all career stages to&nbsp;hear from Engaged Research Manager, Dr&nbsp;Dreolin&nbsp;Fleischer, on&nbsp;different aspects&nbsp;of engaging the public with research.&nbsp;Read on to learn more about what we learnt from each of these sessions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Session 1 \u2013 Planning your PER<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps one&nbsp;of the most daunting aspects of public engagement is knowing where to start. The first of this series advised researchers on how to get the ball rolling,&nbsp;whether&nbsp;for&nbsp;a short-term project, or the beginning of a longstanding collaboration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Think through your options.\u00a0<\/strong>What level of non-academic involvement is most\u00a0appropriate for\u00a0your project, and what form should this take?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Focus on\u00a0the what, why, who, and how.\u00a0<\/strong>What are you looking to solve with this partnership, and why? Who are you working with, and how will this change come about in a way that\u00a0benefits\u00a0everyone?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Time.\u00a0<\/strong>Embed public engagement\u00a0into your\u00a0work\u00a0plan.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Know your audience.\u00a0<\/strong>Engage with communities who have the experience you need, and\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be afraid to use this in your research.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Be flexible.<\/strong>\u00a0Working with non-academic partners\u00a0is\u00a0a great way\u00a0to gain new perspectives,\u00a0so\u00a0let your research develop from this!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Session 2 \u2013 Paying Participants<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to properly reward participants for their time and energy can be a challenge. This session provided researchers with a&nbsp;summary&nbsp;of&nbsp;University&nbsp;guidelines, and options for reimbursement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Find available funding<\/strong>. Some project funding may be used to pay participants, such as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/research\/publicengagement\/waystoconnectwiththeuniversity\/funding\/\">Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Fund<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Budget accordingly.\u00a0<\/strong>When planning your project, consider the costs of both delivering public engagement activities, and reimbursing participants.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Check the standard rates for engagement activities.<\/strong>\u00a0Keep clear records of the time participants have given to the project.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Understand the\u00a0payment processes.<\/strong>\u00a0Familiarise yourself with\u00a0University\u00a0software and guidelines for processing payments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Speak to your partners.\u00a0<\/strong>Some forms of reimbursement may not be\u00a0fully\u00a0accessible, and\u00a0some\u00a0people\u00a0may choose to reject payment,\u00a0or\u00a0donate\u00a0this to\u00a0a\u00a0designated\u00a0charity\u00a0instead.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Session 3 \u2013 Planning Events<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have decided on your activities, and the communities you would like to work with,&nbsp;the next step is to create a safe and effective event plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Early planning is key.\u00a0<\/strong>Knowing your budget\u00a0and activity costs makes\u00a0the later stages of coordination\u00a0and promotion\u00a0much easier.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Accessibility.<\/strong>\u00a0Consider the\u00a0accessibility\u00a0of your venue, as well as any potential needs of your audience, and keep\u00a0all\u00a0language\u00a0precise\u00a0and jargon-free.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Organise your records.<\/strong>\u00a0Keep hold of any booking\u00a0contracts, and\u00a0complete your risk assessment as soon as possible.\u00a0If you are\u00a0participating\u00a0in a\u00a0specific\u00a0festival, check\u00a0its individual guidelines, and consider the equipment you may need (some equipment can be loaned via our <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=d10qkZj77k6vMhM02PBKU382G7HDU3NOkQmpxlkhgnNURUZITEw5V1FJTVhISUIxTzkwMkswSThNUC4u\">Equipment Hire form<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Find your audience.\u00a0<\/strong>Market to your audience via platforms they area already\u00a0using, and\u00a0monitor\u00a0attendee numbers and details leading up to the event.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t\u00a0stop when the event is done!<\/strong>\u00a0Consider how you will\u00a0evaluate and report your\u00a0event, and\u00a0celebrate its impact!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Session 5 \u2013 Ethics<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our final session in the series discussed the ethics of research engagement, and how as a researcher, you can ensure your practice is fair, and in line with&nbsp;University&nbsp;guidelines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Build in time.\u00a0<\/strong>Build in time for ethics approval into your plan, particularly\u00a0when\u00a0submitting\u00a0a grant application.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Communicate with partners about\u00a0the process.<\/strong>\u00a0Non-academic\u00a0partners may not be familiar with University Ethics processes, so let\u00a0them know what to expect.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Be aware of changes to\u00a0University\u00a0research ethics processes.\u00a0<\/strong>You can find the latest information about University of Exeter Research Ethics via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/departments\/research\/researchethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Ethics and Governance | Compliance and Risk | University of Exeter<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Determine\u00a0whether your work needs research ethics approval.<\/strong>\u00a0If you\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0sure\u00a0whether or not\u00a0your research needs ethics approval, ask!
