Read on to&nbsp;hear more about past activities, and how people can get involved in the festival.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This festival, led by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), has been running for more than 20 years, across&nbsp;Universities&nbsp;in every corner of the&nbsp;country. It encourages&nbsp;social science&nbsp;researchers at all career stages to&nbsp;bring their work to those in their local communities,&nbsp;exploring topics&nbsp;from economics, to politics, to human geography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024 and 2025,\u00a0project teams from the University of Exeter took their research outside of the University, working with external partners\u00a0at a range of locations around the city.\u00a0Below are just a few of the projects which took place across two years of this festival,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0our researchers\u2019 wide-reaching\u00a0expertise:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A New History of Women\u2019s Work: Bringing the Tudor Household to Life&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"975\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1603\" style=\"width:184px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/image.png 729w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/image-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This one-day only event formed part of an ongoing project investigating the history of women in the workforce. Led by Professor Jane Whittle, from the Department of History and Archaeology, this&nbsp;took place during the 2025 festival, under the theme of \u201cOur Working Lives\u201d. Professor Whittle&nbsp;worked with local historical&nbsp;site,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nicholaspriory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St Nicholas Priory<\/a>,&nbsp;to&nbsp;give public audiences a chance to peer through the window of the past, and the role that women played in day-to-day life.&nbsp;Historical reenactors took centre stage in the Priory\u2019s beautiful historic&nbsp;setting, and&nbsp;highlighted the lesser-known histories of the Tudor working classes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens &amp; Gains: A Fun Dive into Plant Power!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024\u2019s festival, \u201cOur Digital Lives\u201d saw&nbsp;Professor Natalia Lawrence,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lovefoodcic.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Love Food CIC<\/a>&nbsp;collaborate to address the environmental impact of our&nbsp;food systems, and the positive impact of a plant-based diet. Exeter\u2019s city centre played host to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/b-hugs.org\/2026\/01\/02\/echoes-of-us-at-we-are-we-belong-an-immersive-artistic-exhibition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exhibition of the young people\u2019s work<\/a>, celebrating Black heritage, and the importance of representation for young people in our city. Much of the artwork used in this exhibition has gone on to&nbsp;showcase&nbsp;the legacy and impact of the project, including featuring at our recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/2026\/07\/01\/celebrating-our-engaged-and-participatory-research-fund-awardees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Engaged and Participatory Fund awardee celebration<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Letting the Light In<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1601\" style=\"width:421px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/07\/Letting-light-in-Picture5-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dr Caitlin Kight from the School of Education showed how embodied methods \u2013 more specifically, the medium of dance \u2013 can be used to explore complicated topics, such as loss and grief.&nbsp;Produced with Dance Lab Collective, this&nbsp;2025&nbsp;event invited audiences&nbsp;to engage with&nbsp;these themes, through&nbsp;both a performance and&nbsp;subsequent&nbsp;workshop.&nbsp;Through movement and dance, audiences were given space to reflect, whether they wanted to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;themselves, or simply watch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legacy of these projects, and the impact they have had on their audiences, is, if anything, more important than the events themselves. Even a small-scale public engagement activity can help bring research out into the community, and encourage participants&nbsp;to consider&nbsp;new ideas, and reflect on the role of social sciences in their own lives. Researchers themselves, particularly those starting out on their academic journey, can gain insights into external perspectives, and see their work develop beyond the scope of traditional academia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To take part in the 2026 ESRC Festival of Social Science, researchers&nbsp;can find out more information on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/universityofexeteruk.sharepoint.com\/sites\/RIME\/SitePages\/Translational%20and%20Impact%20Funding.aspx#applications-for-the-2026-festival-of-social-science-are-now-open.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Translational Funding website<\/a>.
