With support from our Engaged and Participatory Research Fund, this project helped support inclusive approaches to heritage in northwestern Argentina. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amount of award:\u00a0\u00a39925<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104624-1024x471.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1723\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.1741210502892745;width:328px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104624-1024x471.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104624-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104624-768x353.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104624.png 1431w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biocultural heritage focuses on the relationships between people and their environments, recognising how Indigenous and rural communities sustain interconnected landscapes,\u00a0knowledge\u00a0and biodiversity.\u00a0This\u00a0project brought together the University of Exeter and <a href=\"https:\/\/fundaciontiempos.org.ar\/web\/\">Fundaci\u00f3n\u00a0Tiempos<\/a>\u00a0to co-create sustainable biocultural heritage strategies,\u00a0working with\u00a0rural and Indigenous communities in the high-altitude valleys of Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina.\u00a0Building on a long-standing partnership, the project combined archaeological, heritage and community-based approaches to document local knowledge and support more inclusive heritage policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This work drew&nbsp;upon on the mature, trust-based partnership between the parties, and responded&nbsp;to the needs of local communities&nbsp;of the high valleys area of Catamarca province, Argentina, which had been&nbsp;identified&nbsp;during&nbsp;previous&nbsp;work.&nbsp;Working closely with&nbsp;these&nbsp;local communities, the project delivered four interconnected work packages:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104831.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1725\" style=\"width:221px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104831.png 517w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104831-245x300.png 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Documentation of women&#8217;s foodways and everyday lifeways through interviews,\u00a0workshops\u00a0and audiovisual recording.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Development of participatory biocultural mapping methods using digital tools and community-led approaches.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Production of bilingual audio-visual materials capturing local knowledge, cultural\u00a0practices\u00a0and landscape connections.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Co-development of policy recommendations grounded in community knowledge and priorities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activities included traditional cooking workshops, collaborative mapping exercises, field-walking seminars, cultural heritage documentation, sensory landscape recording, and explorations&nbsp;of traditional music and drum-making practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through these activities,&nbsp;collaboration between researchers, heritage practitioners and community members&nbsp;was strengthened. This project generated&nbsp;new insights into the relationships between food, mobility, music,&nbsp;storytelling&nbsp;and landscape knowledge, and&nbsp;deepened understanding of how biocultural heritage is experienced and&nbsp;maintained&nbsp;within local communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104732.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1727\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3975470035252644;width:291px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104732.png 900w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104732-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/327\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-11-104732-768x550.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Fundaci\u00f3n&nbsp;Tiempos, the project enhanced&nbsp;their&nbsp;capacity&nbsp;for using&nbsp;digital heritage&nbsp;methods and&nbsp;conducting&nbsp;participatory mapping and collaborative research. Community participants actively shaped project activities and&nbsp;outputs,&nbsp;identifying&nbsp;culturally significant&nbsp;places&nbsp;and supporting intergenerational knowledge exchange&nbsp;in contribution to an audiovisual archive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More broadly, the project strengthened the role of the&nbsp;local&nbsp;Rural Community Museum and Eco-Lab&nbsp;at Barranca Larga, Catamarca province,&nbsp;as centres for heritage stewardship, citizen&nbsp;science&nbsp;and intercultural dialogue. It also helped to&nbsp;foster&nbsp;connections&nbsp;between&nbsp;community members, researchers, media&nbsp;practitioners&nbsp;and policymakers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivering a genuinely collaborative international project within a six-month funding period&nbsp;was difficult, particularly&nbsp;while balancing different institutional and seasonal calendars.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;regular&nbsp;communication, flexibility and shared decision-making, went a long way in overcoming this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found that this open and adaptable project design produces stronger results than rigid planning. Many of the most valuable outcomes emerged directly from participant-led proposals, such as replacing large workshops with smaller community-based activities and a multi-day field seminar.
