At the core of FUTURES 2024 was the Pop-Up Curiosity Shop, based in Exeter\u2019s Princesshay Shopping Centre. Open throughout the weekend, this shop hosted an array of creative events \u2013 from using VR to explain bird navigation, to a research treasure trail.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main focus for this shop was to provide a welcoming site, suitable for attendees of all ages. Including tasks and activities everyone could get involved with, the Pop-Up Shop was attended by over 600 visitors, with contributions from researchers across the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One participant described the event as a \u201creally great relaxed environment for kids, fun for parents too\u201d, and another called it \u201cvery helpful & inspirational\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

To commemorate the occasion, the Pop-Up Curiosity Shop included the creation of a new mural, painted by artist Josephine Birch. Depicting scientific exploration and our natural world, this mural was a physical reminder of everything FUTURES represents. Over 4000 people passed the mural throughout the festival weekend, giving event organizers the perfect opportunity to showcase their commitment to research and discovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For attendees seeking to explore Exeter more widely, a series of Walkie Talkies were held around the city. These guided tours, led by Exeter academics, were designed to shed new light on the city\u2019s history and connection to the natural world. Ranging from an exploration of Exeter\u2019s multicultural history with Dr Ghee Bowman, to a talk on fungi with Professor Mark Ramsdale, the tours were a novel way to witness the city\u2019s sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, the Pop-Up Curiosity Shop and Walkie Talkies worked to make the festival\u2019s commitment to discovery accessible. With designated quiet spaces, and events across the city, all ages and backgrounds were encouraged to attend. Whether participants wanted to learn about Exeter\u2019s links to medieval France, or investigate sustainable energy, these events provided a fantastic new perspective on a city at the heart of the South West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
