{"id":377,"date":"2023-06-16T08:47:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T08:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/physicsinclusivity\/?p=213"},"modified":"2024-02-27T12:56:37","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T12:56:37","slug":"pride-month-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/phys-exe\/2023\/06\/16\/pride-month-lunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Pride Month Lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Write-up by Claire Davies<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/physicsinclusivity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/291\/2023\/10\/PIG_blog_15-1024x768.jpg?resize=768%2C576&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Members of the LGBTQ+ community, and allies, within the Physics &amp; Astronomy department, gathered for lunch on Friday June 2<sup>nd <\/sup>to commemorate Pride Month*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees were encouraged to bring their own lunch, and the organisers \u2013 who also help run regional LGBTQ+ STEMM network <a href=\"https:\/\/prismexeter.com\/\">PRISM Exeter<\/a> \u2013 brought along \u2018Proud to be a Scientist\u2019 stickers, diffraction glasses, and LGBTQ+ STEMM role models leaflets (and cake, of course!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was enjoyed by all, with one undergraduate student feeding back that they usually find academic events a bit awkward but that they found this event really welcoming. There was unanimous support among attendees for such a lunch to happen more regularly, and two members of staff have volunteered to launch a peer support network for LGBTQ+ departmental staff and students and their allies in readiness for the start of the 2023\/24 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Pride Month is a celebration and commemoration of Lesbian, Gay, Bi\/Pan, Trans, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQ+) rights progression and culture. Pride celebrations have historically been held in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in the USA.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Write-up by Claire Davies Members of the LGBTQ+ community, and allies, within the Physics &amp;
