8 February 2022On 1st-3rd February, the MA Applied Security Strategy (MStrat) cohort participated in their ‘Whitehall Immersion’. Across three days, the cohort had the opportunity to gain insight from and interact with a range of policymakers and influencers including politicians, senior civil servants and the private sector.
Topics covered included how the UK crafts national and security strategy, Whitehall ‘strategic culture’, soft power, the role of the defence industry and the role of the media and insight into current UK issues in foreign and defence policy from House of Commons Defence Committee members.
We were given access to a diverse range of perspectives which demonstrated the complexity of competing strategic cultures, agendas and resources at the highest levels of Whitehall and government. As the MStrat is focused on employability and the applicability of strategic thinking in our future careers, we are very fortunate to have had this unique and insightful experience.
