{"id":55,"date":"2024-04-15T14:12:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T14:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/routesblog\/?p=55"},"modified":"2024-04-15T14:12:33","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T14:12:33","slug":"routes-visiting-scholar-guest-lecture-a-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/routesblog\/2024\/04\/15\/routes-visiting-scholar-guest-lecture-a-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Routes Visiting Scholar Guest Lecture \u2013 A Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 19 March, Routes had the pleasure of hosting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/imaginingfutures.world\/people\/gerawork-teferra\/\">Gerawork Teferra<\/a>&nbsp;(Gera) to deliver the 2024 Routes Visiting Scholar Guest Lecture. Gera was selected as the 2024 Routes Visiting Scholar from a pool of highly competitive applications. His six-week visiting scholarship culminated with this lecture titled \u2018Silencing Stories and the Right to Research\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lecture, Gera covered significant ground. He framed the lecture around the inevitability of silencing \u2013 that in research, while some stories are told, others are silenced in the process. He emphasised the power of the researcher in this selection process, and the consequent imbalance that typically arises between the researcher and the researched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gera then turned to the question of how to practically respond through one\u2019s research practice. He advanced beyond the traditional typology of research \u2018on\u2019, \u2018for\u2019, \u2018with\u2019 and \u2018by\u2019,<a href=\"\/\/DF811473-E09E-4060-99A6-440CFF16508B#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;by adding \u2018along\u2019. This idea of \u2018along\u2019 advocates for research that is conducted&nbsp;<em>along with<\/em>&nbsp;the community. In this approach, external researchers&nbsp;<em>accompany<\/em>&nbsp;community-based researchers. In doing so, resources are provided to the community and a culture of doing research is developed. Crucially, doing this effectively requires patience and humility on the part of the external researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gera then provided fascinating insights into his experiences of research into storytelling in Kakuma Camp, Kenya. Particularly insightful were Gera\u2019s observations on the varying ways in which participant groups practiced storytelling \u2013 some funny and light-hearted; others adhering to a more formal structure. The images that Gera shared with us certainly demonstrated this variety in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The range and number of questions, comments and reflections from audience members was testament to the thought-provoking nature of the lecture.
