School Implementation Resources

Implementation Strategies

Implementation strategies are the actions taken to enhance implementation of evidence-based interventions in schools. They support those involved in implementation and address barriers. Evidence based interventions are what is being implemented. Implementation strategies are how we seek to get evidence-based interventions into practice in school settings. For the list of 34 strategies see EEF Guidance Report Appendix 1, page 48.
Beyond Appendix 1 and the Example implementation plan on page 35 fig 5 there is a gap for further explanation of the intended use of strategies, how to select strategy/ies, and what combination of strategies might help to address barriers and improve implementation.

INDIVIDUAL IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY EXPLAINERS
To review each implementation strategy in a little more detail and see examples of use and ways to think about them linked to contexts and behaviours see the following table

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY SELECTION
To aid careful selection of strategies and working out which strategy/ies fit needs or goals we have extended the table to explain how implementation strategies relate to and influence each other to address barriers and improve implementation.

N.B. Sorting strategies can help to focus on those that may hold relevance for certain situations or needs. It is not a recipe, guarantee or designed to find one strategy for implementation.

EXTRA
The equity examples, organising by barriers, and case studies of schools who used a set of strategies for implementing an intervention would be very good. But these need to be additions as the above is about understanding strategies and a way in, rather than about tailoring and which to use.
