School Implementation Resources

Implementation Climate

Implementation climate can be thought of as the perceptions within a school toward implementing change. Factors across the school community impact perceptions including; past experiences, expectations, support, rewards, and incentives. Research suggests that implementation climate has a role in how well implementation is not only received by the school community but also to what extent implementation is undertaken with fidelity and consistency. In other words, when ‘schools attend to behaviours and contextual factors and staff see positive outcomes, the overall climate is likely to improve’ (EEF Guidance Report, page 18).

IMPLEMENTATION CLIMATE EXPLAINER

Watch the video below to hear what an implementation climate is, how it can function, its impact as well how it is different to broader school climate. (Signposts to examples and self-assessment tool below)

IMPLEMENTATION CLIMATE EXAMPLES

The following visuals animations or sections explain how a school’s implementation climate influences people’s behaviours and interacts with contexts such as systems and structures. They also explain what impacts behaviours and contexts can have on the implementation process.

IMPLEMENTATION CLIMATE SELF ASSESSMENT

To assess behaviours and contextual factors associated with implementation climate. The following tool will help by prompting reflection on different elements of implementation climate.

Contextual factors which support implementation climate
Example:  Staff are given the necessary support to implement the new approach? What does this look like Response Pilot a 3 and 5 point scale, but make it RAG rating Reflections  Respondent makes any notes Next Steps  Prompt to add action or for discussion.
 Behaviours which support implementation climate
Example:  A range of individuals across the school know about the new approach and are interested in it? What does this look like Response Pilot a 3 and 5 point scale, but make it RAG rating Reflections Next Steps
