It includes a range of topics examining issues at the cutting-edge of how the European Patent system is grappling with the legal, social and technological changes it currently faces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research-information.bris.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/louise-hatherall\">Dr Louise Hatherall<\/a> (University of Bristol) examines \u201cProcedural issues in public interest patent challenges\u201d; <a href=\"https:\/\/people.ucd.ie\/cliona.kelly\">Dr Cliona Kelly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucd.ie\/law\/research\/researchstudents\/researchstudentprofiles\/rachelclairebrady\/\">Rachel Claire Brady<\/a> (University College Dublin) discuss \u201cResearch ethics and the patent system\u201d; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic-staff\/items\/matthews.html\">Professor Duncan Matthews<\/a> (Queen Mary, University of London) reflects on \u201cThe Covid-19 pandemic: lessons for the European patent system\u201d; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwindsor.ca\/law\/Wissam-Aoun\">Wissam Aoun<\/a> (University of Windsor) considers \u201c\u2018Pith and marrow is dead&#8230;long live pith and marrow\u2019: the doctrine of equivalents after Actavis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Issue also features an editorial written by Dr Karen Walsh, Professor Aisling McMahon and Professor Naomi Hawkins reflecting on key aspects of how the current European patent system is affected by contemporary technological, legal and social developments. In this context, the editors call for greater critical reflection and dialogue within\u2014and outside\u2014the patent community, around the role and operation of patent law, to ensure it is fit for purpose and best aligned with the public interests at stake in our society.<\/p>\n<p>The UK and Ireland Patent Scholars Network was founded in 2019, with inaugural network workshops held at the University of Exeter in <a href=\"https:\/\/scule-centre.onyx-sites.io\/exeter-law-school-hosts-inaugural-patent-scholars-network\/\">April 2019<\/a>, and Maynooth University in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maynoothuniversity.ie\/news-events\/maynooth-university-hosts-first-irish-meeting-patent-scholars-network-20th-and-21st-june-2019\">June 2019<\/a>.
