SPACE-Gov explores Sustainable Space Future with space experts at ESA
On 16 May 2023, Dr Nikita Chiu joined international space experts to explore potential and challenges associated with advancing an inclusive and sustainable space future at ESA HQ in Paris.
The expert group discussed possible future scenarios in managing spectrum, strengthening inclusivity, enhancing multilateral collaboration, and preventing irreversible catastrophic scenarios, such as Kessler syndrome. The meeting also discussed prospects for strengthening international co-operation for the burgeoning moon-bound economy, for example, in developing a global space academy to support moon-bound efforts.
SPACE-Gov’s intersectoral and novel approach transcends disciplinary boundaries, bringing together insights from social sciences, policy and law, and science and technology.
The project produced a very powerful policy brief, which states the problems clearly, and gives tangible and original recommendations. Topics such as space sustainability and supply chain are very broad topics, but they were addressed with a fresh perspective throughout the project, injecting much-needed dynamics into ongoing discussions.”

We are among the first to convene at the newly refurbished headquarters of ESA. We would like to extend our gratitude to Kai-Uwe for hosting us at ESA HQ in Paris.
