Georgie Gardens, a University of Exeter Sports Scholar, gives us an insight to how she has balanced her studies with international hockey.

I’m graduating from the University of Exeter with a 2:1 Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Balancing my studies with the demands of international hockey has been challenging but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved both on and off the pitch during my three years here.

Hockey has been a huge part of my university experience, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a close and competitive team environment. From BUCS Wednesdays and away trips to playing home matches in front of a big crowd, I’ve made memories that will last a lifetime. The friendships I’ve built through hockey have been one of the most valuable parts of my Exeter journey. Also, student life at Exeter has given me the balance I need alongside my sporting commitments, meeting so many amazing and supportive people.

The support from the Performance Programme and the Sports Scholarship has played a vital role in my development both as an athlete and a person. The access to tailored gym programmes, use of the hockey pitch for extra skills sessions, and informative nutrition talks have all helped my performance. Having a mentor throughout has also been valuable, especially during times when balancing academic deadlines with international training and matches felt overwhelming.

Some of the proudest moments in my sporting career so far have come during my time at Exeter. I was part of the squad that won bronze at the U21 Euros in Spain. I also earned my first senior cap playing in the FIH Pro League in India, competing against both India and the Netherlands, and more recently represented GB in the Home Pro League against Australia, Argentina, and Spain.

Looking ahead, I’m now training full-time with GB Hockey after being offered a part-time contract last November, which allowed me to complete my studies before fully joining the programme in May. My goal is to continue developing as an athlete and to compete at major international tournaments, including the upcoming European Championships this summer.” – Georgie Gardens, Graduating Sports Scholar 2025
