Prevention<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse collapsed show\" id=\"collapse1390\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-139\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-1390\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW207333198 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked SCXW207333198 BCX0\">Prevention is actions taken to keep people healthy and stop them from being negatively affected by a problem by preventing the problem from happening.<\/span><\/span><\/p><blockquote><p>Example: A secondary school teaches lessons that reduce stigma by including education about mental health, self-harm, and suicide.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-1391\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse1391\" aria-controls=\"collapse1391\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> 2. The coach takes them aside after practice and checks in about how they&#8217;re feeling and what&#8217;s going on.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-1392\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse1392\" aria-controls=\"collapse1392\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> 3. Postvention<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse \" id=\"collapse1392\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-139\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-1392\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><p><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked SCXW138305344 BCX0\">Postvention is actions<span class=\"TextRun SCXW207333198 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked SCXW207333198 BCX0\"> taken after a serious situation or problem has happened, to manage it carefully so that<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked SCXW138305344 BCX0\">\u00a0it is less harmful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p>Example: A support worker helps a family to find out information, access a local support group, and be referred to long-term resources when someone has died by suicide.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\">Phase 1 Study (2022 \u2013 2024)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We are investigating how secondary schools, colleges and youth organisations currently support young people&nbsp;with self-harm and suicide. We are doing this in four different ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#126457\">We recruited Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) stakeholder groups to work with us and inform what we do<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">We conducted a scoping review of current guidance available to those supporting young people with self-harm and suicide<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">We used secondary data analysis to investigate 1) who young people talk to about self-harm and suicide, and 2) how prevention, intervention and postvention programmes communicate about self-harm and suicide<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#126457\">We surveyed schools, colleges and youth organisation governing bodies (YOGBs) to understand current policy and approaches to prevention, intervention and postvention of self-harm and suicide for young people<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\">Phase 2 Study (2024 \u2013 2026)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Based on our learning from Phase 1, we are co-producing principles of practice to support organisations working with young people around self-harm and suicide prevention and postvention. There are two parts to this project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">We conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with:<br>&#8211; Young people aged 14 to 21 who have experience of self-harm or suicide<br>&#8211; Adults who work with young people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#126457\">We will then do a Delphi study to co-produce \u2018gold-standard\u2019 principles of practice.
