From the 13th<\/sup>– 15th<\/sup>\u00a0of October 2026, the University welcomed its inaugural \u2018Reuse and Recycling Week\u2019. Organised by the Sustainability, Regional Engagement and Community Engagement teams, the event brought together a range of local organisations and opportunities to encourage recycling, reuse and repair in Exeter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability is a key principle for many Exeter residents both within and beyond the walls of the University. But how can students navigate the challenges of recycling and reuse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students move to Exeter from elsewhere in the country, adapting not only to living independently for the first time, but to living under the jurisdiction of a new council, and with new waste and recycling guidelines. Others might be looking to acquire homeware and University supplies at a low cost, or get rid of things they no longer need at the end of the academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversations with the Exeter community panel, hosted as part of the Exeter Civic University agreement, and at a joint community-student sustainability pop-up conducted in 2025, have shown there is a strong appetite for pooling together knowledge across students and local residents, helping both communities engage with and push for a sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, October brought together local businesses, contractors, councils, community organisations, student societies and more to highlight just some of the ways recycling and reuse can be made easier for students looking to make an environmental change that works with their day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week began with an introduction to the opportunities for sustainable waste management in the local area.\u00a0SUEZ<\/a> invited visitors to participate in an interactive game to teach about recycling, and\u00a0Devon County Council<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Recycle Devon<\/a>\u00a0shared information about how to cut down on waste and recycle correctly. There was also a pop-op Reuse Shop by the local SUEZ team based at Pinbrook Road Recycling Centre, which brought a range of low-cost second hand goods onto campus for staff and students to purchase, with the total proceeds of \u00a3380 going to Macmillan Cancer Charity. Students were also encouraged to share their thoughts on engagement with independent businesses through a survey hosted by\u00a0InExeter<\/a>, for the chance to win an\u00a0Exeter Independent Gift Card<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who wanted something more hands-on, students could show off examples of their own upcycling projects. Once shared with the Sustainability team, entrants have the chance to win a hamper of donated goodies, including an air fryer, toastie maker, cookware and even a 32-inch TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the week continued, students could share their thoughts with the Community Engagement team on food waste recycling, and hear from members of the University about the\u00a0history of Co-Op<\/a> and its sustainability initiatives. They could also speak directly to the\u00a0Student Guild\u2019s Sustainability Officers<\/a>\u00a0about how campus, and their University experience, could be improved through simple sustainable changes. Student society\u00a0Be the Change<\/a>\u00a0also created their own pop-up stall to highlight their work for and with Exeter students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also opportunities to interact with local communities and organisations, including creative activities with Exeter Scrapstore<\/a> and support from Wellbeing Exeter<\/a>. Anyone looking to find more ways to engage could hear from Circular Social<\/a>, who work with local businesses to create eco-conscious social events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sustainability team\u2019s\u00a0Gift it Reuse it<\/a>\u00a0scheme was in full force throughout the week. This scheme invites students to donate unwanted items of homeware, stationery and even electronics, which others can pick up and take home free. Students could browse a range of glassware, cookware, calculators, mugs, and even an air mattress to take home at no cost, saving all of these items from potentially going to waste. Hundreds of items across the three days were rehomed, with more opportunities for donation available later in the academic year. The University’s Repair Caf\u00e9<\/a> initiative was also promoted to both staff and students looking to repair any items that were broken, in order to keep items in circulation for longer and encourage less wasteful behaviours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students living further afield, off-campus support was available through the\u00a0Community Engagement<\/a>\u00a0team. At their external pop-up, students could treat themselves to ice creams, and collect a food waste caddy, while learning about best practice for effective food waste recycling in their shared accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday,\u00a0Stitch and Save<\/a>, and\u00a0Community Action Groups Devon<\/a>\u2019s Clothes Swap stall included everything from jeans and winter boots to activewear. This activity was completely free of charge, and saw more than 100 visitors. Meanwhile, the\u00a0Fixy<\/a>\u00a0team\u2019s pop-up van accepted many donations of broken and unwanted electronics from staff and the community, to be taken away for repurposing and recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event reached hundreds of students and staff from across the University, encouraging conversations about recycling and reuse, and the value of sustainability for both individuals and the environment in which we live.
