New training courses launched

We are pleased to announce the following training opportunities have now been scheduled into Trent:

  • Coaching and Mentoring for Technical Staff – During this 3 hour workshop you will be introduced to the founding principles of coaching and mentoring, will learn how to adopt a coaching style in conversations and see the benefits this produces.  You will also examine how to get the best out of time you spend coaching and mentoring others.  Finally, you will get a chance to practice using coaching skills in one-to-one and group situations.
  • LTHE1 “Learning and Teaching in Higher Education” – The one day course will provide an introduction to a range of principles of teaching and learning and you will explore how all kinds of interactions with students can lead to learning and you will have the opportunity to explore the knowledge, understanding, skills and values needed to enable students to learn effectively in a modern higher education environment. You will also be able to practise teaching an aspect of your subject in a short micro-teaching activity, and gain valuable and constructive feedback from peers.

This training forms part of the Technical Staff Structured Development Framework suite of training opportunities.

Staff should book onto the training through Trent after consultation with their line manager.

TechNet launched online

The Technicians Network (TechNet) has now been launched online at https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/technet/home (link updated 2019)

  • Have you ever not known how to fix an instrument or tackle a problem?
  • Have you ever thought “I want to progress my career but really don’t know how you would go about it?

If you answer yes to either or both of these questions then the TechNet Forum is for you!

Technical Services has a wide range of highly skilled, knowledgeable technical staff with huge amounts of experience, but we are dispersed amongst a variety of buildings and campus.

The aim of the TechNet forum is to bring together the whole technical community, breaking down the boundaries and building a supportive and knowledgeable community to enable us all to do our jobs better and develop our own careers and aspirations.

TechNet is not just for the University of Exeter, it has been created to help technical staff at all Universities to network.  It is also closely tied to the IST and many staff in the forum would be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you.
