16 Jun 16: Science Council – Regional Registration Event (Streatham)
University champions personal development and professional registration at awards event
The University of Exeter’s role in supporting and promoting the vital contribution of technical staff to the development of science has been celebrated at a special awards event on Streatham campus.
The Science Council, a membership organisation for professional bodies and learned societies across the disciplines of science, has recognised the University as an Employer Champion for its commitment to actively promoting and supporting the professional development and recognition of our scientific staff through professional registration, and providing an environment in which registrants are able to uphold their codes of conduct.
At the event in June, Deputy Registrar Jacqui Marshall took receipt of the Employer Champion plaque from Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive of the Science Council.
The Environment Agency’s National Laboratory Service also received a plaque and the two organisations were praised for being the first two Employer Champions in the South West.
The University employs over 185 technical staff who currently support around £168m of live scientific research grants and the delivery of a wide range of teaching activities across all levels of study from undergraduate study to postgraduate research degrees.
Jacqui Marshall said: “Technical Services staff are the ‘unsung heroes’ of the University. They make an absolutely essential contribution to research and learning here at Exeter, from maintaining equipment through to assisting in experiments relating to ground-breaking scientific research. Their work frees up valuable academic time, supporting our key researchers in making scientific discoveries which have global impact. Becoming an Employer Champion with the Science Council demonstrates our commitment to professional standards, by investing in our staff and having their skills and competence recognised.”
Jonathan Cresswell, Deputy Head of Technical Services, said: “We are pleased to be able to support the development of our staff, and help them gain recognition for the skills they have and the brilliant work that they do by becoming professionally registered. It is therefore exciting for us to be formally acknowledged for the support we are providing with the help of the Science Council through their Employer Champion scheme.”
