IMG_1426Even before the slogan ‘Technicians Make it Happen’ the idea of a Fab Lab where a range of 3D printers could be used for teaching and research across the college was formed by one of our inspiring technicians, Russ Edge from the Workshop team in Harrison building. Russ had been running the two 3D printers for the past two years and had seen a steady increase in demand for the use of these printers. He saw an opportunity to create something modern, forward thinking and exciting in the field of engineering. Although he muted the point to various people around the college, it was when Prof Paul Reynolds, our new head of Engineering came across Russ’s idea for a Fab Lab that things really came together. Prof Reynolds facilitated and supported Russ in the idea of a 3D printing unit open to all in EMPS. The funding was obtained and the printers are coming in! A section of the teaching workshop space will be refurbished to house and highlight this Fab Lab and its fantastic new 3D printing unit. The Unit will also be able to accommodate requests from outside of EMPS and teaching during slower periods thus progressing research and encouraging collaboration between groups, departments and colleges. We will keep you up to date on Russ’s progress towards a Fab Lab in the Harrison building!
