One of those details is ensuring your PDF has an embedded document title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A document title helps people using assistive technologies understand what a PDF contains before they start reading it. It also improves the experience for anyone opening the file in a PDF reader, where a meaningful title is far more useful than a filename such as <strong>final_v3_approved.pdf<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/web\/accessibility\/\">The University&#8217;s web accessibility guidance<\/a> requires non-exempt PDFs published on our websites to include an embedded document title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does a PDF title matter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An embedded PDF title is separate from the filename. Screen readers and PDF viewers can use this metadata to identify the document and provide a clearer experience for users. A title such as <em>Undergraduate Open Day Guide 2026<\/em> is much more informative than a generic filename.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding a title is one of the quickest accessibility improvements you can make to an existing PDF and can often be completed in less than a minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before making changes to a PDF, check whether the document is exempt from accessibility requirements or whether there are any restrictions on editing it, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/departments\/communication\/communications\/design\/\">Design Studio<\/a>, third-party, password-protected or digitally signed PDFs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full details and exceptions can be found in the University&#8217;s guidance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/web\/web-accessibility-training\/t4-editors-foundation-level\/pdfs\/pdf-document-title\/existing-pdfs\/\">adding or editing a document title in an existing PDF<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using ABBYY FineReader to add a PDF title<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pdf.abbyy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABBYY FineReader PDF<\/a> is available for University-owned Windows devices through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/departments\/it\/help\/new\/companyportal\/\">Company Portal<\/a> and provides a simple way to update PDF metadata without requiring an Adobe Acrobat Pro licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.
