{"id":1705,"date":"2026-09-30T10:39:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T10:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/webteam\/?p=1705"},"modified":"2026-10-01T09:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T09:56:20","slug":"building-the-student-voices-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/webteam\/2026\/09\/30\/building-the-student-voices-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Building the Student Voices Hub"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, the Campaigns team in External Engagement and Global came to us with an idea: to create a dedicated space online where prospective students could find authentic stories and insights from current University of Exeter students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already had students generating content about life as an Exeter student in a variety of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Student Bloggers<\/strong> &#8211; writing posts on a range of topics, from Freshers Week through to preparing for life after university. The blog has been active for over a decade!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Student Vloggers<\/strong> &#8211; students sharing their experiences through video, published on our YouTube channel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Student Stories<\/strong> &#8211; After migrating the entire Student Blog to the new platform, we reviewed and consolidated the existing topics and settled on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>8 main categories<\/strong> &#8211; the broad themes that act as the main content buckets. Every post <em>has<\/em> to sit in one of these main categories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Around 40 tags<\/strong> &#8211; more specific topics that allow content to be connected in greater detail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives us a much simpler and more consistent structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Category pages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of the eight main categories has its own colour, creating a visual starting point for visitors exploring the Hub. Wherever a panel linking to a post appears across the Hub, it&#8217;s accompanied by it&#8217;s coloured category label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Category pages display the latest content from all three sources in that category &#8211; blogs, videos and student stories.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress allows us to add bespoke content to the sidebar of each category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when a visitor views a post in the <strong>Careers<\/strong> category the sidebar shows careers-related tags, alongside links to relevant University content such as the Career Zone and Alumni profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means the category sidebars also act as gateways into relevant parts of the University website, helping prospective students explore Exeter&#8217;s offer in more detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tags provide another way for users to explore the Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the bottom of each post, users can see up to five tags related to its topic, again mixing blogs, videos and student stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where categories are the broader topic areas, tags are more detailed, creating connections between pieces of content that previously existed separately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current tags are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex the most and least populated tags, providing a helpful view of which content areas we need to enhance on the Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing Student Voices into the main website<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most useful aspects of the new structure is that the content doesn&#8217;t have to stay within the Student Voices Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the content is organised using consistent categories and tags, we can pull live feeds of relevant content directly into pages across the main University website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, our page introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/student-life\/cornwall\/\"><strong>student life in Cornwall<\/strong><\/a> includes a feed of content tagged <em>Exploring Cornwall<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"369\" No additional CMS update is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve now set up more than <strong>20 feeds<\/strong> across the website, covering topics including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settling in as a new student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funding and scholarships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Careers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Day trips in Devon and Cornwall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study tips<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And many more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping prospective students find authentic content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student generated content gives us an opportunity to cover topics in much greater depth than we would normally be able to on the main University website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual student blog posts can answer very specific questions and provide first-hand experiences of university life. Voices Hub gives us a central home for student-generated content, but its value goes beyond the Hub itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By creating a consistent structure around categories and tags, we can connect student content together, surface it in relevant places across the University website and keep those feeds up to date automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also gives prospective students more opportunities to hear directly from people who are experiencing university life right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next challenge is making the most of the platform: continuing to build the content library, understanding which topics students are looking for and using the data to
