Do you fancy a fun and informative afternoon? Are you interested in publishing or further study? If so, we are reminding you to join us for the launch of Publishing and Literary Networks in the South West at Exeter Library.
The launch is packed full of events that will be sure to interest everybody. The launch starts out at 11am with a short introduction by MA Publishing course leader D-M Withers, who also runs their own queer reprint publisher. After that, a workshop led by Anne Le Brocq will be fun and hands-on. Le Brocq is an artist and geographer based in the South West, and the workshop will inspire attendees to create a plan for a blanket inspired by the South West landscape and literature. This workshop is currently sold out!
There are several panels throughout the course of the launch, starting with an interesting panel at 1:30pm on Decentralising the UK Publishing Industry. The panel includes Anna Cohn Orchard, Billy Kahora, Ray Chubb and Sophie Dickinson. With a wide range of interests spanning from Cornish-language publishing, creative writing and accessibility for new recruits entering publishing, the panel explores the topic of decentralisation through the experiences of those currently publishing outside of London, the struggles that they face and the opportunities that arise from being outside of the mainstream.
The second panel comes after a live performance by singer-songwriter (and also student!) Lana Danzeisen. This panel at 3pm is titled Why it’s important to support marginalised voices in publishing’. Featuring Helen Chaloner, Suresh Ariaratman and Mimi Jones, this panel will discuss the failures of publishing to face up to its diversity problem and ways we can support those from marginalised communities who want to enter publishing. All of the panellists are involved in work in this area, so it will be a lively and informative discussion.
Throughout the event, there will be tea, coffee and biscuits available for free! Bookbag will also have a stall outside the room with books relevant to the topics discussed, so come and have a look whenever (I know I don’t need an excuse to buy a book). Attendees will also be able to take leaflets and bookmarks with extra information from the organisations mentioned in the publication so you can research more in your own time.
