Student Brinda offers her tips on finding private accommodation after the first year at university.

So, after living in university halls, you might feel ready for more independence. When it’s time to find somewhere to live in private accommodation in the city – here are some tips from my experience.

  1. Good places can get claimed quickly, especially in popular student areas. But it’s always best to take your time and look at all the options before jumping into signing a contract. Not only will you be deciding to live with the decision, but also the people you’re sharing with (if you choose not to live alone) and the costs for the following year, so make sure you’re sure.

2. Think about what’s most important to you:

  • Distance to campus?
  • Number of housemates?
  • Budget?
  • Are bills included?

3. Hit up letting agents reviewed on TrustPilot or StudentCrowd where possible. Exeter Students’ Guild and the University’s Residence Life Team often have good advice on where to start; they’re there to help.

4. If you can, always try to view a house or flat before signing anything. Like I always say, “Not every Reel is Real”, ditch Instagram a go get a feel for the place IRL.

5. Don’t just consider rent; factor in utilities, internet, and any potential commuting costs.

Living off-campus is a great way to experience more of Exeter while still staying connected to everything you love about student life. It’s an entry into the real world without all the real-world worries. Dear reader, you’ll be just fine!
