You’re a few weeks into your new life in Exeter and you may already be hearing from other students or local agents that you need to start looking for next year’s accommodation. If that’s the case, please don’t panic – help is here.

Move Smart

Together with the Students’ Guild, we’ll be helping you to Move Smart – take your time, understand all your options and make the right choice for you when it comes to finding a place to live.

Although you may be feeling pressure to start your search early, there is a lot of accommodation available in Exeter and taking your time to consider all the options is the smart move.

Take the Pressure Off and Broaden Your Horizons

If you want a particular type of accommodation in close proximity to campus and it’s on a popular street, you may need to act quickly to tick it off your wish list. But you need to be certain you have made the right choice – on price, people to live with and the quality of the accommodation – before you commit yourself to a legally binding contract.

By being open to other options, such as locations slightly further away from the University, or a type of accommodation that you hadn’t previously considered, you’ll take the pressure off yourself and buy time to research, ensuring you’re making the right decision for you.

Help is Here

Over the next term and beyond, you’ll find a wealth of relevant information through the Move Smart campaign, including:

  • Where to look, how to look and what to look for
  • Myth busting about living in private accommodation
  • How to decide who to live with and how to find those people
  • Blogs and videos from students, sharing their experiences and top tips
  • The paperwork you need to carefully consider before agreeing to or signing anything. Don’t worry, our resources and advice teams can help.

Events

We have a range of events over the coming months.

The Accommodation Fair will take place in early November in the Forum and will give you a change to speak with landlords and other accommodation providers, to see what accommodation is available in Exeter.

Drop-in sessions will take place in university residences and in Devonshire House (DH1) with advice from the Students’ Guild Advice, Community Engagement and Residence Life Teams. At these events, you can:

  • Ask questions and get advice on anything related to finding and moving into private accommodation
  • Find potential people to live with
  • Get advice on settling in and integrating into life in the city
