Inherited genetic variants can modify the effectiveness of medications, and contribute to inter-individual variability and susceptibility to side-effects. We provide much-needed observational evidence for the effect of pharmacogenetic variants on commonly-prescribed preventative medications for cardiovascular disease, especially statins (prescribed to reduce cholesterol), antihypertensives (prescribed to reduce blood pressure), and antiplatelets (prescribed to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks caused by blood clots).
