The Raman microscope is the most common form of Raman instrument commercially available for research. The Raman microscope allows visualisation of a samples surface with white light, while also allowing the collection of the Raman signal at the same point. When the Raman signal is collected across the surface, typically through a raster scan, a Raman image can be created. This allows a map of the samples chemistry to be visualised in up to three dimensions. This chemical map can be used to inform about the sample in a number of ways:
