At the beginning of April, the Grounds team carried out an aerial rescue training exercise, rehearsing one of the most critical skills in arboricultural work.

The scenario involved rescuing a simulated casualty – the Estates Patrol resuscitation dummy – from high within the tree canopy using specialist climbing equipment and rope systems. While the casualty wasn’t real, the techniques practised are essential in an emergency where an arborist becomes injured or incapacitated while working at height.

Aerial rescue requires precise technical skill, calm decision‑making and strong teamwork, often in challenging conditions. Regular training ensures the team can respond quickly and safely if the situation ever arises.

With around 10,000 trees across the grounds, the arboriculture team plays a vital role in maintaining safety, tree health and biodiversity across the estate. Training exercises like this highlight the expertise behind the scenes and the importance of keeping skills sharp.
