Finding My Feet in Exeter

Walking through the bustling paths of the University of Exeter, surrounded by the ancient dignity of its buildings and the fresh vitality of its students, I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a keen sense of challenge. Freshly embarked on my MSc, I was encircled by peers each harbouring their own dreams and aspirations in this renowned academic haven. Coming from India, where securing a job followed a straightforward path, I was now navigating the complexities of the UK job market. Yet, little did I know, within just a month, I’d be celebrating the clinch of securing an internship, an experience that would redefine my professional journey.

Navigating the Application Maze

My journey to securing the perfect internship began in earnest with Handshake, the University’s dedicated job portal. This wasn’t just any job-hunting tool; it felt tailor-made, connecting me with potential employers and presenting internship opportunities that aligned perfectly with my field of study in digital marketing. Handshake cut through the complexities of job hunting, offering streamlined paths that seemed designed just for my skills and ambitions.

Then there’s the Career Zone – my absolute sanctuary. The advisors there weren’t just advisors; they were like career wizards, equipping me with everything I needed to tackle the UK’s complex application process. They showed me how to use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to make my applications pop. It turned the dreaded task of essay writing into a chance to shine. I got to outline my past roles in vivid detail, showing off how I tackled challenges, led teams, and nailed projects. This wasn’t just about filling out forms; it was about telling my story in a way that got heads turning.

Contrary to common narratives about the necessity to apply to dozens of positions, my focused and well-structured applications yielded quick and positive responses. Out of five applications, I received two interview offers. This early success wasn’t just a career opportunity; it was a massive boost to my confidence.

Meeting Cath Harris: A Mentor and More

Choosing IPSA Consulting was a no-brainer. Their drive for sustainability and ethical marketing was right up my alley – it was the perfect match. And meeting Cath Harris, the brain behind IPSA, was the icing on the cake. Cath was more than a boss; she was a mentor and a leader who believed in nurturing and inspiring her team. Her approach was all about empathy, support, and pushing creative boundaries. She respected our academic commitments, often scheduling meetings that dovetailed smoothly with our university timetable, which greatly eased the balance between coursework and professional responsibilities.

At IPSA, I was entrusted with a significant project right from the start – developing a comprehensive marketing strategy for a sustainability initiative. This project was not just a task; it was an impactful journey. Under Cath’s guidance, I learned to navigate through complexities with a strategic mindset, applying classroom theories to tangible business outcomes.

But, life’s not always smooth sailing, right? Midway through the project, I hit a health snag. But Cath’s first words were, “Your health comes first.” It was reassuring to know that I was valued beyond just my output. Her leadership taught me the importance of balance – a lesson I’ll carry with me beyond my internship.
