That’s a wrap on our masterclass with film director and producer Don Boyd. We had a full screening room yesterday afternoon for 7 short films made in less than 72 hours. Poignant, humorous, inventive and utterly representative of the collaborative and creative ethos of our Department.

We’ve been refining this annual masterclass for four years. Initially we focussed on Acting for Screen and have since been setting new tasks for directors, cinematographers and actors culminating last year with fully improvised short films. Building off a January writing masterclass with Simon Stephens, we invited student writers this year and asked the groups to explore the playful tension between a scripted and improvised short film. The students didn’t disappoint.

As Don said, The atmosphere and sense of passionate creativity led to a clutch of seven excellent short films. Congratulations all. It was a privilege to meet you and be part of the process and a unique project.

And students responded: ‘An intense but wonderful three days, developing great practical skills and learning from the extensive experience of Don Boyd’

Look forward to next year’s intensive and to see more live, intermedial and screen performance work happening throughout our student’s learning journeys!
