Career Paths after MA Theatre Practice

21 July 2025

Our MA Theatre Practice students and alumni have been wonderfully busy and creative this summer, making exceptional performances as creative professionals!

Here is some of their news:

1. Menghan Chen, Yirui Fu and Jia Zhuang (MATP 2024-2025) presented their devised piece The First Ripple as part of Exeter Phoenix’s May Scratch Night. As an outcome of this performance, they have now been commissioned to present the piece at Reclaim Festival in the autumn of 2025.
Yirui noted: “It was truly meaningful for us to step beyond the campus and share the piece we devised in our course with a wider audience. Since Scratch Night is designed as an experimental event where audience feedback genuinely matters, we received sincere, positive, and constructive comments and suggestions — all of which we deeply value and find very helpful as we continue to develop the work. Performing on a new stage and for a different audience also brought us fresh stimulation and inspiration.”

2. Dorry Dong (MATP 2024-2025) was cast in the new staging of Romeo & Juliet produced by Exeter Northcott.
Dorry shared: “I was cast in Romeo and Juliet, a stage production at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter, which ran from 2nd to 12th July 2025. I was part of the Capulet ensemble, contributing to both physical sequences and group scenes. The experience deepened my understanding of how a professional theatre operates and helped lay the groundwork for future work.”

3. Yuxi Huang (MATP 2023-2024) premiered Boss and Brew Academy, a short film she directed, as part of Screen Alliance Wales’s Vocal Histories of Wales project.
Yuxi has been working as Supporting Artiste in film and TV work around Cardiff and Bristol. She was nominated for Best Runner at the 25th It’s My Shout Awards.

4. Xinyue Xing (MATP 2022-2023) is opening her new theatre piece, Bound by the Wind, as part of The Camden Fringe Festival in London (2-22 August). The piece was written and directed by Xinyue.

5. Qingyang Wang (MATP 2019-2020) presented her piece Journey of Whispering Dreams at the Bread and Roses Theatre in London. The piece – written and directed by Qingyang – received support from RichMix and Fuse and was previously presented at Etcetera Theatre in London. In May, Qingyang took up a Seeding Space residency at the London Performance Studios to R&D her new piece, Bamboos Waiting. 6. Giorgia Ciampi Tsolaki (MATP 2012-2013) has been touring the new piece she devised and performs, The Spiral. A scratch version of the piece opened at the inaugural Reclaim Festival in 2024, and since then it has been performed at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, the Barnstaple TheatreFest, and, currently, at the Intercultural Theatre Institute at Singapore, in association with CHOWK productions. Giorgia is also a visiting tutor at the MA, where she teaches kalaripayattu. Millie Sale, one of our recent graduates (MATP 2023-2024), assisted Giorgia in the first version of the piece.

We wish to congratulate all our graduates for the beautiful work they are making!
