In UoE Digital we value skill development and career progression. Rebecca Jeavons joined the team as a Digital Hub Ambassador while studying at the University and quickly progressed through a Graduate position to become a Performance Analyst.
Here’s what Rebecca has to say about her time in UoE Digital so far:
“UoE Digital has enabled me to progress from a part-time student ambassador position to a full-time Performance Analyst in the space of just 2 years. Working in UoE Digital has enabled me to gain skills and experience in a range of different roles and the wealth of opportunities for upskilling and development have well prepared me for my current role.
I started my current role as a Performance Analyst in Digital at the start of June 2023 after spending 9 months working as a Digital Enablement Officer through the Graduate Business Partnership (GBP) scheme, which I started after graduating from my undergraduate degree also at UoE. While studying I worked as a Digital Hub Ambassador, helping our students with using digital tools.
During my time as a Digital Enablement Officer, I learned from different people within the team and got involved with a range of projects. I started helping with the recruitment to the Digital team by creating and publicising job specifications and organising interviews. Then I began working as a Scrum Master for Digital’s Chatbot product and for the Design chapter. There are so many development opportunities in Digital, and I was able to become a Certified Scrum Master which developed and improved some of the skills I was actively learning through doing the job each day, and having this certificate is a great way of showing my Agile skills within my CV.
Over the last few months of my GBP role I was focusing on doing data analysis for the attendance monitoring product and tracking the performance of the team through our KPIs each month. As these tasks related to my degree and my career interests, I was super excited to learn more and develop my data skills. This then led to me pursuing the Performance Analyst job as I knew it was what I wanted to be doing full time.
I’ve now been in my current role for a month and my favourite part is being in a position where I am trusted and get to own something important. I am responsible for all of the performance data within the team and manage creation of the data insights that are shared widely within the University. Not only have I been using the skills I learnt during my time as GBP in my new role, but I have also been able to incorporate some of the core data skills that I had learnt during my undergraduate degree.
The one piece of advice I would give to recent graduates who are currently looking for jobs would be don’t be scared to take a GBP or junior role to start with – they may not be exactly what you are looking for, but they can provide you with invaluable experiences and training that can then create more job opportunities in the near future in your chosen field.”
