Drawing together mathematical expertise from across the University

Exeter Centre for Mathematical Sciences

The Exeter Centre for Mathematical Sciences acts as an organic network of mathematical interests across the University of Exeter, drawing together expertise from all faculties in the areas of research, education, outreach and innovation in all matters related to mathematics and its applications.

We run occasional events with a mathematical and/or statistical focus from across all disciplines. Other activities will follow depending on interest and input from the community. If any of this sounds like something you’re already doing – then great! We would love to promote this more through the network!

The centre is for all University of Exeter staff needing access to advanced mathematical knowledge. It is not ‘owned’ by any single department, though it is supported by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We join researchers from a wide variety of departments including, but not limited to:

  • Department of Biology
  • Department of Computer Science
  • Department of Earth and Environmental Science
  • Department of Economics
  • Medical School
  • Department of Physics
  • Department of Psychology

Professor Andrew Hillier

I joined Exeter in 2016 as an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellow after two years as a researcher at the University of Cambridge, and six years in total at Kyoto University as a PhD student and then a postdoctoral researcher.

Having initially obtained a Masters of Mathematics from the University of Leeds, my career has taken me back and forth between Applied Mathematics and the applications of Mathematics in Astrophysics.

As Co-Director for the Exeter Centre for Mathematical Sciences I am hoping to use my position to build and develop links between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the other Mathematicians in the University.

Professor Stuart Townley

I am a founding co-director of the Exeter Centre for Mathematical Sciences. I am based in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science on the Penryn Campus. Since 2011, I have held the Chair in Applied Mathematics in the Environment and Sustainability Institute. Before that I was Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at Exeter.

I am interested in dynamical systems and control: the study of things (mechanical, biological, electrical, environmental) that interact and evolve in time and can be predicted, managed and/or optimised. I work with colleagues across the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy, and beyond, to understand the workings of natural and man-made systems.
