The Farming Futures Cycle Tour

Participant observation

I will take fieldnotes – including digital and handwritten notes, sketches, videos and photos at events, fieldwork, and other moments of interaction or reflection within and around the project. The fieldnotes will be both descriptive and reflective, including our observations, impressions, thoughts, ideas, and questions.

I will not be recording every conversation or detail, and I will not be evaluating or assessing anyone: the fieldnotes are interpretive rather than evaluative

Will I be identified in the data or outputs?

Fieldnotes will follow the ‘Chatham House Rule’: information arising during observation will be used as data and shared, but not attributed to individuals. Sketches and photos will be taken and used in ways that avoid identifying individuals (such as close-ups, blurring faces, etc.). Although I will make every effort to ensure that no identifiable details are included in the data, I cannot guarantee complete anonymity.

What if sensitive / confidential information or situations arise?

If you would like specific comments or conversations to be ‘off the record’, please let me know and I will respect your request. I will also follow situated ethics practices, meaning that I will be alert to sensitivities, and, where needed, check in with you to ensure they you aware of and comfortable with my presence as an ethnographer, ending the observation if not.

Can I withdraw later?

If you contact us to withdraw (before publication of outputs using the data), I will remove data as far as possible. However, as names will not be recorded in the fieldnotes, removal may be limited.

Consent

If I have asked you to fill out a consent form following our conversation, please do so here.
