Jack is currently working as a Graduate Research Assistant under Prof. Andy Watson and Dr. Marie-Josè Messias as part of the NERC funded TICTOC project. His main role will be to collect and process data from several research cruises throughout 2018 and 2019; as well as providing technical support to the team.
Jack graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Ocean Science from Plymouth University and with an MSc in Climate Change Science and Policy from the University of Bristol. His particular interests lie mostly within the variability of mixing and circulation rates in the North Atlantic Ocean. For his BSc honours project, he used the General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM) to assess the impact of surface salinity between 50°N and 70°N on the climate in the UK. For his MSc thesis he investigated AMOC temporal and spatial variability, linking buoyancy changes in the Greenland Sea to a subsequent change in AMOC strength on a 5-year lead-lag basis.
Prior to his position at the University of Exeter he worked at the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) in Plymouth, where he oversaw the day-to-day running of the front of house department. During his time here he helped them improve their sustainability practises, leading to several national awards and substantial press coverage for the NMA.
Outside of work he is a keen sportsman, participating in a number of summer and winter sports throughout the year.
