Slavic and East European Maternal Studies Network

About

An AHRC-funded network based at the University of Exeter (UK) and the University of Vilnius (Lithuania) bringing together researchers in Maternal Studies and Slavic and Eastern European Studies.

Welcome to the Slavic and East European Maternal Studies Network website, co-organized by Dr Muireann Maguire (University of Exeter) and Dr Egle Kackute (University of Vilnius) and funded by an AHRC Networking Grant (2021-22). We are a network of academics involved in Slavic Maternal Studies, researching pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, maternal health and behaviour, and other aspects of maternity in the context of the literature and cinema of Slavic and East European nations. Our primary focus are maternal fictions – cultural constructions of mothers and maternity. We also welcome the participation of scholars working on the sociology and history of motherhood and maternal behaviour.

We hosted three seminars to discuss sensitive aspects of motherhood and parenting with writers and local family support groups. All three seminars are open to the public.
Two academic conferences in Vilnius and Exeter, plus two amazing motherhood-themed exhibitions in Exeter during 2022!
