If this is your first winter in the UK, one thing that can come as a bit of a surprise is how early it gets dark. When the clocks go back at the end of October, suddenly it can feel like the sun is setting just after you’ve finished your afternoon classes. Add in colder weather and a few rainy days, and it’s easy to see why some students find this time of year an adjustment.

The good news is that you’re definitely not alone. Lots of international students (and plenty of UK students) need a bit of time to get used to shorter days.

A few things that can help:

  • Try to get outside while it’s still light, even if it’s only for a quick walk around campus.
  • Keep some structure to your day, especially around sleep and meal times.
  • Stay active. A gym session, sports club or even a walk with friends can boost your mood.
  • Make plans with other people rather than hibernating in your room all winter.
  • Be kind to yourself. It’s normal to feel a little less energetic when the days are shorter.

One of the best ways to beat the winter slump is to have things in your diary to look forward to. The University’s International Student Community and Support programme runs events throughout the year that are a great way to meet people and celebrate different cultures, and the Intercultural cafe is running regular social events on Streatham Campus.

Coming up soon is the University’s Diwali celebration, taking place on 15 November 2026, with cultural activities, food, performances and fireworks on the Streatham campus. It’s always a really welcoming event and open to students, families and local residents. You can find out more here: Diwali | International Students | University of Exeter.

Off campus, Exeter gets particularly festive during the winter months. The Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market runs from 13 November to 13 December 2026 and can be fun to walk around after dark (if you want to go at a quieter time, pick a weekday morning). For more ideas, take a look at What’s On in Exeter and the Exeter Students’ Guild Events page: there are Halloween crafts and film nights coming up soon.

And finally, a quick reminder: if you’re finding the darker days are affecting your mood, motivation or wellbeing, support is available. The University’s Wellbeing Services can help, whether you’re feeling stressed, homesick, anxious or just not quite yourself.

Winter in Exeter can feel very different from home, but it can also be cosy, festive and full of opportunities to meet new people. A warm coat, some good friends, and a few fun plans can go a long way! 😊
