Hi, I’m Emily – a first-year Zoology student at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, and I’m loving it so far! From the green, nature-filled campus to the many vibrant student societies and beautiful town of Falmouth, it is easy to fall in love with university life in Cornwall. I’d love to share what drew me here and why it might be the perfect choice for you too.
Living in Cornwall
One of the biggest factors in my decision was the location. I knew I didn’t want to study in a big city, and the opportunity to study and live in Cornwall was incredibly appealing. There is so much to do and see, and getting to explore the surrounding area has made my first few weeks so enjoyable. From sunset sea swims and beach BBQs, to going out for a coffee in Falmouth, exploring Falmouth’s nightlife, or going on a coastal walk, there is something for everyone. One highlight for me has been joining the Expedition society, which has allowed me to explore some beautiful places, such as Kendal Vale Nature Reserve and part of the coastal path, walking from St. Austell to Charlestown.
Societies
This leads perfectly onto another reason I chose Exeter, the incredible range of societies! There is so much to get involved with and the friendly committees make it so easy to feel at home. Alongside Expedition, I have joined EcoSoc, Marine Watch, gig rowing, and the book club. The variety of societies immediately drew me to the University of Exeter and it has allowed me to explore my current interests while discovering exciting new hobbies.
Making friends
Leaving home for the first time is a bit daunting, but it is also exciting. Making friends is not always easy and can take time, but it is not something you should worry about. During my first few weeks I met so many people, from my flatmates to people on my course and through societies. Don’t be scared to start a conversation with someone beside you in a lecture hall, and suggesting to meet up afterwards is a great way to start making friends. Joining societies has also really helped me to meet so many new people, and from various years. I think the best way to also make friends is to socialise with your flatmates; suggest a movie night or a flat dinner to get to know them more.

Teaching and opportunities
Something else that influenced my decision to choose the University of Exeter was the great teaching and opportunities that came with my course. The University is ranked 2nd in the world for ecology, something that quickly became evident during my first few weeks. The interesting modules, paired with great teaching meant Exeter was always one of my top choices for university. I really don’t think there is a better place to study Zoology! Moreover, the range of field trip opportunities also made Exeter my top pick. In my first few months, I’ve been on field trips to Lands End, Gwithian Towans, Helford Passage, and Devichoys Wood, all of which gave me early experience with fieldwork, and they were really enjoyable. In second year, I also get the choice to go to the Isles of Scilly or Scotland, followed by a field trip abroad in third year, which I am looking forward to. The range of field trip opportunities offered by the University is another reason that drew me to Exeter, as I knew they would not only be fun but also develop critical skills for my future career.
Support
Equally important is the amazing support available from the University. Whether it’s the Students’ Union, the help desk, IT services, financial support or the accommodation team, everyone at Exeter is genuinely friendly and eager to help. It is reassuring to know that if you ever need advice or support, you are never on your own. And to top it off, the community in Cornwall is so warm and welcoming, it really hasn’t taken long to feel at home.
Accommodation
This year I am living on campus in Glasney student village, and I am loving it so far. Living on campus has really helped in first year as it is not only close to the lecture halls but also means you get to meet lots of new people, whether they are your flatmates or from neighbouring flats. There is also a campus shop, which provides for your everyday needs, as well as multiple cafes on campus. Glasney Lodge also provide 24-hour help if you need it, and there is a post office on campus. For next year, I am looking for a house to rent with some friends either in Penryn or Falmouth, both of which have many options, and I am excited for the new experience of living off campus.

The Penryn Campus
Moreover, the campus was a major factor in attracting me to study in Cornwall. Of course, the modern and comfortable library and lecture theatres are great, but it was the abundance of green space, quieter areas, lively cafes, and the on-campus bar that made the environment feel so vibrant and diverse. The campus is also incredibly well-connected; with a nearby train station, regular bus services, and Penryn town just a short walk away, it is easy to get out and explore the beautiful surrounding areas. So far some of my favourite places I have explored have been: Godrevy, Fowey, Perranporth, Mutton Cove, and there are many places I would still love to visit, such as St Ives, The Lizard and Penzance.
My experience at an Offer Holder Day
After attending the Offer Holder Day, the University of Exeter immediately became where I wanted to go. The strong sense of community, inclusive atmosphere, and friendliness made me confident I would enjoy my time here – and so far, it has not disappointed! The day included a campus tour, as well as other helpful talks on finance and support. For me, the best part of the day was getting hear from current students about their experiences and hearing how much they loved the University. I also got to meet some of my degree lecturers and received a short sample lecture, making me confident this was the University for me.
First Year So Far
Finally, since moving to Penryn, Cornwall, I have not only been able to start studying a course I love, but I have also been able to explore new hobbies and meet new people. I have also gained confidence through living by myself for the first time and from trying new things. Learning how to manage money, cook, and do laundry all whilst having a social life and keeping on top of studies has been fun, as I have gained many new experiences since coming to university.
I have really enjoyed university life so far, especially when I get to study and live in such a beautiful area, with so many places to explore. Living in a small town and studying at a smaller campus has created a real community and supportive feel to the University, and I can’t wait for the next three years at the University of Exeter!
