Theme: Behind the Research: the two-body dilemma and family as a woman in Science

We will be joined by Dunia Urrego, Associate Professor at the University of Exeter and an international researcher working in biodiversity, environmental change and climate change. Her research explores how biodiversity responds to environmental and human-driven changes, using approaches from palaeoecology, environmental and earth-system science. Dunia will share her career journey and experiences as a woman and international researcher in science. Through a short presentation, she will reflect on some of the opportunities, challenges, and experiences that have shaped her career. Dunia’s talk will be followed by an open Q&A session and discussion. The session aims to inspire reflection, connection, and empowerment within the Women in Climate community.

For our November event, we’ll be discussing careers in software engineering. We’ll be joined by Carolina Duran Rojas, Software Engineer at the University of Exeter; Fliss Guest, Head of the Research Software and Analytics team at the University of Exeter; Emma Hogan, Senior Scientific Software Engineer at the Met Office; and Alex Stanhope, Scientific Software Engineer at the Met Office. Our panelists will share a bit about their career journeys and experiences as a software engineer. The session will be an interactive panel discussion, with plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions and engage with our speakers.

Theme: Inspiring Women in Science: Nic Bellingham

We are excited to be joined by guest speaker Nic Bellingham . Nic is the Associate Director for Data Production and Supply at the Met Office, she leads the capability responsible for the production, management and delivery of the data that underpins the Met Office’s operational weather and climate services. This includes the 24/7 operational delivery of numerical weather prediction and climate data products, the platforms and services that support those operations, and the continued evolution of the operational technology estate. Nic joined the Met office in 1992 and during that time she has worked across a variety of technical, operational and leadership roles, gaining a deep appreciation of the people, services and partnerships that enable the Met Office to deliver its mission every day. One of the highlights of Nic’s career has been being part of the SC2020+ Programme and helping to deliver the Met Office’s transformational supercomputing capability. We hope to see you at this event to hear more about Nic’s career and the interesting work she does! There will be opportunities to ask Nic questions and engage with her during this talk.
