Our MA Theatre Practice students recently compeleted their annual residency at the Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London.

The MA Theatre Practice at Exeter has a long-standing relationship with the theatre, and every year, during Term 3, our students take up a week-long residency in their premises.

During this intensive week, they undertake workshops, rehearsals and masterclasses in voice, movement, acting for Shakespeare and stage combat, alongside lectures, tours of the spaces, attending one of the shows, and a Q/A with one of the theatre’s directors.

This year’s trainees commented:

“Compared to the more contemporary approach in Exeter, our week in London gave us the chance to engage with performance from a more mainstream perspective, which proved also both generative and deeply inspiring. We learned from professionals truly embedded in the industry, took courses, stepped into theatres and galleries, and immersed ourselves in all that London has to offer. On the days we had classes at the Globe, it felt as if a Shakespearean charm had passed through me, and I drifted blissfully among the clouds as I stood in both, incredibly powerful, theatres. I was reminded of how the idea of play is woven into every play itself, giving endless vitality to the work, and it made me reflect on why we continue to study and perform Shakespeare, time and again.” – Yirui Fu

“In our study at The Globe, I had a deep first-person impression of the British theatre stage and its history for the first time. Their training on drama is very comprehensive, involving voice, physicality, theoretical discussion, improvisation techniques and even specialised training on stage combat! I really liked it!” – Yifang Hong

“It was a meaningful and valuable experience to learn theatre practices at Shakespeare’s Globe, one of the most renowned theatres in the world. I particularly appreciated learning how to approach the script initially and how to use the space effectively as an actor to engage the audience.” – Hyomin Jin

“The Globe was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had, which not only laid a foundation for my future work but also created unforgettable theatre memories with friends and with the incredible professional actors and directors.” – Dorry Dong

“For a week, we got to live the dream. One week of learning, studying, and experiencing theatre as a collective. We lived together, worked on lines together and found a greater understanding of theatre and ourselves. The Globe Residency was a perfect example of where we can go and what we can accomplish.” – Sarah Kalm

The residency is organised by MATP course director Prof Konstantinos Thomaidis and the Higher Education team at the Globe, with support from the Communications, Drama & Film Department of the University of Exeter.
