My educational journey started in Ghana, where I earned a degree in BSc in Business Administration.

The challenges posed by COVID-19 along with concerns regarding climate change and environmental issues motivated me to differentiate myself as a business student. My aim was not only to stand out among other graduates in the business market but also acquire new skills to assist businesses in my country transitioning toward a circular economy. This approach aims to reduce waste in operations, lower costs, and create a win-win situation for both businesses and the environment.

I began searching for an institution that was actively engaged in meaningful initiatives and research, that would also equip students with essential skills. I was drawn to the University of Exeter because of its strong reputation as a leader in environmental research and sustainability.

The student support provided by the University is exceptional and most importantly the campus in Penryn is beautiful and blessed with many green spaces. My decision to study here was further solidified when I was awarded the Green Futures scholarship. This scholarship has played a major role in supporting my academic journey, by offering me stability to focus on my studies in order to achieve my goals.

Since arriving on campus, it has been nothing but an incredible experience. I have had the opportunity to interact and work in teams with students from diverse backgrounds with a variety of goals. Academic staff are always willing to lend a helping hand when needed and the career services have been invaluable, offering great advice on job applications. Most importantly, I have great flatmates who are consistently welcoming.

In addition, the academic department has been phenomenal in offering workshops and access to resources that have enriched my work. One standout experience was my involvement in a collaborative project that explored the impact of regenerative tourism on Ghana’s economy. This was a great blend of academic learning and practical application, enabling me to see the real world of sustainability. I explored modules such as Environmental Governance, which focuses on the impact of human and business activities on the environment.

Through this course, I had the opportunity to create a TikTok video for the first time. Although I am not very comfortable on camera, this experience helped me build my confidence and develop new skills in video creation and editing.  I also learned how to write, design, and present a policy brief. In the Sustainable Business Management module. I worked in a group as a consultant for the Eden Project, exploring and identifying areas to improve and develop tangible solutions, communicating these to the business for implementation.

Living in Cornwall has provided an ideal environment for studying with its peaceful surroundings. I am in well-maintained student accommodation, and my favourite spots include the stunning beaches of Falmouth and the relaxing Tremough Gardens on campus.

What has surprised me the most about studying at Penryn Campus is the emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches. It is inspiring to see individuals from varied backgrounds unite to address sustainability challenges.

To any prospective students, my advice is simple: do not hesitate to take the leap. The support system, vibrant academic community, and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to sustainability make the University of Exeter an exceptional choice. If you’re passionate about sustainability and innovation, there’s no better place to be than at Exeter.
