BILETA Research Seminar: Commercial Law and Quantum Technology – New Approaches

Send proposals by 15 May, event takes place on Friday 13 June 2025

Hybrid format: In-person at the University of Exeter & Online

Introduction

The University of Exeter School of Law, in collaboration with BILETA, invites you to a one-day hybrid seminar exploring the intersection of commercial law and quantum technology. As quantum computing progresses from theoretical models to practical applications, its implications for commercial law are becoming increasingly significant.

Quantum technologies are already shaping areas such as investment strategies, financial transactions, and regulatory compliance. Yet, legal frameworks have yet to fully address the unique challenges and opportunities posed by quantum computing. This seminar provides a platform for academics, practitioners, policymakers, and industry professionals to discuss emerging issues and explore innovative legal approaches.

Key Themes

We invite submissions on any topic related to quantum technology and commercial law. Areas of particular interest include:

  • Quantum-inspired legal theories and their application to commercial law
  • The impact of quantum computing on contracts, transactions, and dispute resolution
  • Regulatory frameworks for quantum technology in financial and corporate sectors
  • Ethical and security considerations in quantum-based commercial applications
  • Quantum technology’s role in reshaping global trade and investment

We welcome both completed research and works in progress, with an emphasis on fostering discussion and collaboration.

Submission Guidelines

We invite submissions from academics (including postgraduate researchers), legal practitioners, and policymakers. Your application should include:

  • Abstract (300-word limit)
  • Short bio (50-100 words) for each author
  • Complete contact details for the corresponding author
  • Preferred participation format (in-person or online)

Please submit your proposal (in Word or PDF format) to Dr. Chunping Bush, University of Exeter at C.Bush@exeter.ac.uk by 15 May 2025.

We aim to notify participants of acceptance by mid-May. There is no registration fee, as this event is generously supported by BILETA Research Seminar Awards and the University of Exeter.

A post-seminar report will be published on the BILETA website, and selected contributions may be considered for publication in an edited collection.

For further details, please contact Dr. Chunping Bush, University of Exeter at C.Bush@exeter.ac.uk in the first instance or Dr. James Griffin, j.g.h.griffin@exeter.ac.uk
