Would you like the opportunity to represent the University of Exeter at one of the world’s most prestigious international mooting competitions?

Applications are now open to join the Exeter team for the 34th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, taking place in Vienna from 19-25 March 2027.

The Vis Moot is one of the largest and most highly regarded international law student competitions in the world, bringing together students, academics, lawyers and arbitration practitioners from across the globe. The competition focuses on international commercial law and arbitration and offers an experience quite unlike any other moot.
Last year, Exeter had a fantastic showing in Vienna, and this year we are looking for a new team to build on that progress.

The Vis Moot offers an exceptional opportunity to:

  • Represent the University of Exeter internationally at one of the world’s leading mooting competitions.
  • Develop advanced skills in legal research, written advocacy and oral argument.
  • Draft substantial written submissions that reflect practice and prepare for advocacy against universities from around the world.
  • Gain practical experience of international commercial arbitration and international sales law.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, receptions and other events taking place around the Moot in Vienna.
  • Meet and network with students, academics, arbitrators and leading practitioners from across the international arbitration community.
  • Develop your confidence, teamwork and advocacy skills while gaining an experience that can significantly strengthen your CV.

The Vis Moot is an enormously rewarding experience, but it is also one of the most demanding competitions in our mooting programme. Preparation begins well in advance of Vienna and continues throughout the academic year. Team members will be expected to contribute fully to the preparation of the team’s written memorials, undertake detailed legal research, practise oral advocacy regularly and work closely with the other members of the team.

There will also be a programme of coaching and preparation sessions. These are essential to ensure that the team is properly prepared for the standard of advocacy expected at the competition. Applicants should therefore consider carefully whether they can make the necessary commitment alongside their studies before applying.

All applicants must also ensure that they are available to travel to Vienna and participate in the Moot from 19–25 March 2027.

Applications are welcomed from students at all stages of their studies.

You do not need to have previous experience of mooting or international commercial arbitration. We are looking for students who can demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, strong research and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
