This competition will be open to all undergraduate and post-graduate taught students. The first round of the competition will take place during Week 8 (W/C 13th November).

To participate in the competition, you will need to be in teams of 2 students.  It is up to you who you pair with and so please only register your interest once you have formed your team.

Each team will compete in a scenario-based client interview.  The ability to interview new clients effectively in order to obtain information is a key legal skill utilised by legal professionals.  Teams in the competition will be scored on establishing a professional relationship, obtaining information, learning the client’s goals, expectations and needs, problem analysis, legal analysis and giving advice, developing reasoned courses of action, assisting the client to make an informed choice, effectively concluding the interview, teamwork, ethical behaviour and personal reflection.  This is your opportunity to experience all of these different facets of interacting with client.

Teams will be provided with the scenarios ahead of time and so each team will have an opportunity to prepare before their allocated slot.  Teams will be marked according to a scoring matrix. The four highest scoring teams from the first round will progress to the final.  The final will be at Foot Anstey’s Exeter office on the afternoon of 22 November 2023.  After the final round has taken place, there will be an opportunity to network with various lawyers from the firm, ranging from Partner to Trainee level.

The highest scoring team from the final will be the winners.  The winning team will then be eligible to go on and represent the University and Law School at National Client Interviewing Competition 2024.  Details of previous CIC competitions can be found here –  https://www.clientinterviewing.com/about.html

The winners of the National Student Client Interviewing Competition have the opportunity to represent England in the International Competition.  Further information about the International Competition can be found here – https://www.brownmosten.com

“This is a fantastic opportunity for all students to get involved and to develop a key legal skill in the form of engaging with clients in a professional setting.

Please note that the deadline for registration of the teams of 2 students is by 5pm on 30 October 2023.  Register your team by emailing mooting@exeter.ac.uk with the name and email address of both students in each team.
