21 January 2026We are delighted to be welcoming Vicki Prais to the University of Exeter Law School on Wednesday 25 February 2026 for a special guest workshop, ‘Get ready for job success: Your career in human rights’, from 13:00 – 16:00, supported by the University of Exeter’s Alumni Annual Fund.
Are you interested in working in the human rights and/or social justice sector? Are you unsure where and how to start?
This workshop equips you with practical skills, knowledge, industry insights and tips to help you feel more confident about taking those first steps in pursuing a career in the sector. The three-hour workshop will cover the following areas:
Human rights careers 101
You will gain an understanding of the current human rights market, skills, qualities and assets required to work in the sector, lifestyle, remuneration, different human rights roles and top tips to help you as you start out.
Ace your application materials & Interview preparation
You will cover the key elements of drafting a compelling human rights CV and cover letter for human rights roles. It will look at current industry trends including social impact CVs and using AI to create your application. We will also talk through ways to highlight your skills and experience, common CV mistakes and other top tips. This session will also focus on essential preparation techniques for interview, managing competency-based questions and other top tips to boost your confidence and land your first human rights role.
Personal branding for human rights careers
In this session, we will discuss the importance of building a strong personal brand as a human rights professional. We will think about how best to leverage LinkedIn to build and grow your professional brand as well as outreach and networking strategies to help you build your confidence in growing your human rights network both off and online. As part of this session, we will conduct a LinkedIn live review of a well-curated human rights profile.

Meet your facilitator

Vicki Prais is a human rights lawyer, independent human rights consultant, academic and human rights career coach with recognised expertise in prisoners’ rights, prison reform and humane detention. Vicki has 29 years’ experience in International Organisations (the UN, Council of Europe), the British Government (UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Human Rights Advisor), National Human Rights Institutions (the Scottish Human Rights Commission), the non-governmental sector (Penal Reform International, Amnesty International, Prisoners Abroad) and academia (currently a Visiting Professor of Human Rights, Birmingham City University).
Vicki is also passionate about her work as a human rights career coach and has coached and supported more than 350 human rights professionals (and counting) as they navigate their careers in the human rights sector. She is very proud to have helped her clients secure roles with International Organisations, international NGOs and other human rights institutions. Vicki delivers this work through dedicated and bespoke Power Hours on CVs/cover letters, interview preparation and personal branding for human rights careers. Vicki has also given human rights careers talks at universities and other institutions (Clooney Foundation for Justice, Lawyers for Justice in Libya, the European Law Students Association) globally as both a keynote speaker and panellist on this topic.
