Join the European Law Moot Court Team and represent the University of Exeter!

Applications are now open to join the Exeter team for the 2026–27 European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC).

The European Law Moot Court is an international competition focused on European Union law. Established in 1988, it attracts university teams from across Europe and beyond and combines substantial written advocacy with oral pleadings conducted in the style of proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union. The competition final is held at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.

For more information about the competition, visit: https://europeanlawmootcourt.eu/

The ELMC offers an exceptional opportunity to:

  • Represent the University of Exeter internationally in the most prestigious EU Law moot competitions.
  • Develop advanced skills in legal research, written advocacy and oral argument.
  • Gain practical experience of advocacy modelled on proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
  • If successful in the written stage, compete against universities from around the world at one of the competition’s Regional Finals.
  • Have the opportunity to progress to the European Final at the CJEU in Luxembourg.
  • Meet and network with students, academics, practitioners and EU law specialists from across Europe and beyond.
  • Develop your confidence, teamwork and advocacy skills while gaining an experience that can significantly strengthen your CV.

The ELMC is an enormously rewarding experience, but it is also a demanding competition requiring a significant commitment from all four members of the team.

The 2026–27 problem has already been released and the team will be required to prepare two written pleadings: one for the applicant and one for the defendant. These must be submitted to the competition by 25 November 2026 and are assessed anonymously through the ELMC’s double-blind assessment process. The 48 highest-scoring teams then progress to the Regional Finals.

Preparation will therefore begin immediately following selection. Team members will be expected to contribute fully to legal research and drafting, work closely with the other members of the team and, if Exeter qualifies for the oral rounds, participate regularly in advocacy and preparation sessions. There will be support from the law school at all stages for the team selected including coaching.

If Exeter qualifies for the oral stage, team members must also be prepared to travel to a Regional Final in early 2027. The locations of the 2027 Regional Finals have not yet been announced. Successful teams and individual advocates from the Regional Finals may subsequently progress to the European Final in Luxembourg in March or April 2027.

You do not need to have previous experience of mooting. We are looking for students who can demonstrate a strong prior grades in EU law, enthusiasm, commitment and excellent communication skills.
