    Nuclear Societies

Nuclear Societies is a leading research group interested in nuclear energy and nuclear waste management as sociotechnical matters. It is based in the University of Exeter, with affiliated members from the University of Liverpool.

It was initiated in 2013 as an ESRC-funded PhD initiative. The current cohort of PhD candidates are funded by the UK’s Nuclear Waste Services and the University of Exeter.

As a research group, Nuclear Societies undertakes grants, collaborations with technical groups, and regular academic symposia and workshops. The latest international symposium was organised in 2025 (“Energy Infrastructures and their Communities”), which brought together academics and professionals from nine universities across the UK, France, Canada, USA, and Germany.

Nuclear Societies is associated with SHARE (Social Sciences and Humanities in Ionising Radiation Research).
