Our next open day will be Saturday 11 July, 10am – 4pm
This will take place over two venues – the excavation site will be open for booked, timed tours (scroll down for more details) and at Halberton village hall, we’ll be hosting a Roman Fun Day.
Roman Fun Day – Halberton Village Hall
Come along to Halberton Village Hall, from 10am – 4pm, for our Roman Fun day! No booking required.
There is some parking at Halberton village hall. If this is full, please head to Greenway, where you can park in the Grand Western Canal car park:

Visiting the excavations
Our Eventbrite booking page for guided tours is now closed. Morning tours are fully booked, but there are spaces on tours from 12.30pm onwards (although we realise that is the hottest part of the day) so please just turn up from that time. Although you will be able to visit the site without being on a guided tour, it is recommended to join one to enter the excavation trenches and see the mosaic. Families with children are welcome to join the tours.
Parking will available two fields (c.300m) away from the excavation site (see map below). We will be operating a one-way system for cars. Please drive down the lane from the edge of Sampford Peverell, over Battens Bridge, past the site to the parking field. When leaving, please exit towards Halberton and the village hall. This one-way system will make everything safer and easier!
Note that the lanes in the area are narrow – please drive slowly and carefully, and look out for pedestrians.
We recommend walking or cycling to the site, and encourage you to use the canal towpath from Sampford Peverell or Halberton. The site is located on National Cycle Network Route 3. Sampford Peverell is served by local buses and Tiverton Parkway train station is a 35-40min walk away.
There are portaloos on site, but no refreshments, and little shade. Please dress appropriately for the weather, with sturdy shoes.
Our open day and Roman Fun Day are entirely free, but we would encourage you to donate if you enjoy your visit! You can do so when you visit, or by following the link on our Support Us page.
