Quantifying pyrogenic carbon stocks, soil organic carbon, and fire-climate feedbacks in Amazonian forests

Outreach & Impact

Bringing fire science to policymakers, land managers, and communities across Amazonia

Stakeholder engagement

Amazon PyroCarbon is designed to produce actionable science. We engage directly with stakeholders and partners in Brazil — including government agencies, NGOs, and local land managers — to ensure our findings reach those who need them most.

Our goal is to provide the scientific evidence needed to inform climate mitigation targets, including Brazil’s Paris Accord commitments and its 2060 carbon neutrality goal. By synthesising our data to estimate the regional SOC flux, and by identifying land management practices that enhance soil carbon sequestration, we can help slow the release of carbon that has accumulated in Amazonian soils over millennia.

É Fogo!

Our research contributed to the É Fogo! book, a public-facing resource that brings the science of Amazonian fire to a wider audience in Brazil and internationally.
