Just as another season begins, we caught up with Ultimate Frisbee to see how they got on in the 2022/23 season. As a dynamic and spirited club that fosters a love for the sport and its community, UF has a student-led squad that encourages the growth and development of student athletes. The club has succeeded in all National BUCS indoor and outdoor tournaments in the women’s, men’s and mixed divisions. Over the past year, the club has actively participated in various tournaments, BUCS matches, charity fundraisers and numerous social events. With up to 10 hours of training each week available, members can choose which sessions and social events to attend and tailor their experience to suit their university lifestyle. Ultimate Frisbee is an inclusive sport that welcomes everyone of all abilities. Here’s a small taster of what the club had to offer during 2022-2023:

Sporting achievements:

Last October, UF entered 5 teams into the Plymouth Beginner’s indoor Tournament, a fun weekend organised with the aim of promoting the sport to new players. Following this, they went on to enter 10 indoor squads into the regional qualifiers in the women’s, men’s and mixed divisions, with all three 1st teams successfully qualifying for BUCS Nationals and the Men’s 2nd team. Indoor Nationals took place in Glasgow, Coventry and Nottingham and saw our mixed squad placing 4th in Division 2, our Women’s squad placing 9th overall in the country and our men’s 1st team 15th in Division 1 and the Men’s 2nd team 15th in Division 2. With our mixed squad having won Division 2 of Mixed Indoor Nationals the previous year, they aim to achieve this again in the 2023-2024 season.

The outdoor Frisbee season also brought the club plenty of success. With numerous wins in the 1st and 2nd term BUCS matches, both the men’s and women’s outdoor 1st teams gained a place in BUCS Outdoor Nationals which took place in April. The Men’s 1st team placed 4th in Division 2 and the Women’s 1st team placed 10th in Division 1, making for a hugely rewarding outcome of dedicated training over the year. Furthermore, in late June, ultimate frisbee entered two teams into the Mixed Outdoor Nationals tournament. They are very proud to say that the first team placed 8th overall in the UK. We hope that the next year will bring them even more success.

Charity fundraisers:

Probably the most notable charity fundraiser of 2022-2023 for the club was Movember. Over the course of November, the majority of our club members signed themselves up to complete challenging, entertaining or impressive tasks in order to raise money for men’s mental health. This is a yearly tradition within the club and they are extremely happy to say that last year they were able to raise a spectacular £1134 for the charity. Movember supports a meaningful cause and next year they hope to exceed the amount raised last year.

Ultimate Frisbees club’s performance of the last year has showcased not only their drive and skill, but also their commitment to contributing positively to society and encouraging a vibrant social environment. The club is looking forward to welcoming new members in September 2023 and having another incredibly successful and fun year! You can find out more about the club on their Instagram page.
